Vijan, originally released in 2003 by I Grade Records, is a seminal release from the “golden era” of St. Croix roots reggae, now available for the first time on 12” vinyl courtesy of Before Zero Records.
Produced by the legendary combination of Vaughn Benjamin and Laurent “Tippy I” Alfred, Vijan balances the raw, spiritual intensity of Vaughn’s songwriting with the sophisticated, melodic arrangements that became the hallmark of the I Grade sound.
This album features an incredible lineup of musicians who helped shape the sound of Virgin Islands reggae. The production credits boast the textured guitar layers of Tuff Lion, the deep, driving bass of Kenyatta Itola, and the rhythmic precision of Dion “Bosie” Hopkins. Uniquely, this album also showcases Vaughn Benjamin’s versatility as a multi-instrumentalist, contributing drums, bass, and keys on standout tracks like “All Ye Naashan” and “Thanks for Life”.
Akae Beka’s inimitable style of rich, deep, multi-layered songwriting and uncompromising devotion to Rastafari is on full display here. At the point of his untimely passing in 2019, Vaughn Benjamin had released over 70 albums, solidifying his place as one of the most prolific reggae artists ever known. Vijan remains a glowing highlight in this expansive catalogue, capturing a specific moment of creative brilliance in the early 2000s.
The vinyl reissue allows listeners to engage with the album’s analogue richness and features the striking original artwork by Marcus Wilson.

The continued relevance of the work of Akae Beka is forceful on the movingly topical Rastafari statement Imandment To Heart. Taken from 2021’s album Polarities and produced by Zion I Kings with Tippy I at the helm, the track presents a striking contrast: an uplifting major-key Rub A Dub rhythm, powered by renowned Jamaican drummer Kirk Bennett, sets the stage for scathing lyrics linking “chaos theory,” refugee crossings, and prophetic judgment. Vaughn Benjamin calls for a moral law “written upon the inward part” amidst global turmoil. Released on 7” vinyl for the first time by Before Zero Records, the single is backed by a B-side dub sculpted sonically by Laurent “Tippy I” Alfred at his Holy Mountain Studio in St Croix.
This series honours both the vocal and version culture of the reggae sound system and the profound lyricism of Vaughn Benjamin. We have consistently received two requests in relation to releasing the LPs: “Can we have dub versions?” and “Where can we read the lyrics?” Our response is the ‘Akae Beka - vocal, version and word- sound collection.’ Before Zero Records worked with Tippy I Grade to mix a series of dub mixes from a carefully curated selection of his extensive works with Vaughn Benjamin. The vocal and corresponding dub mixes were then cut to wax by Lewis Hopkin of Star Delta and wrapped in a collage made of Ras Marcus’s artworks, which he crafted for various LP covers of Vaughn’s works throughout the years with the lyrics transcribed and printed on the rear of each sleeve.

The much-missed Vaughn Benjamin reminds us why his approach to reggae lyricism remains peerless with “Charges,” a standout track from the Polarities LP released on 7” vinyl for the first time. Arriving amidst an era of global economic shifts, the release feels forcefully timely. Genius metaphorical wordplay and wide-ranging subjects are distilled into a cohesive whole as the global economy and its entrapping neo-colonial rules come under the microscope. Produced by Zion I Kings with Tippy I at the helm, the track is anchored by the rock-solid drumming of Lloyd “Junior” Richards and the propulsive bass of David “JAH David” Goldfine. This release features a previously unheard B-side dub, giving space to the celestial synth work of the late Andrew “Drew Keys” Stoch.

Vaughn Benjamin, the voice of Midnite and Akae Beka, is one of the most prolific reggae lyricists of the modern era. He was a scholar, poet and teacher. He released over 80 albums in a 25-year period.
In late October of 2019, Vaughn travelled to Grass Valley, California to record at Ras Biblical’s studio, Trinity Farm. Earlier this year, the album “Living Testament” album was released from those sessions.
Yet, there’s more to this story! In Biblical’s words:

Recorded in 1997, Mountain Top features the commanding vocals of Tony Roots, backed by the legendary Firehouse Crew and produced by the visionary Fada Waz (Clifton Carnegie). This record’s release was driven by the people, evidenced, and encouraged by the countless wheel-ups and sing-alongs during King Original’s international tour dates over the last three years whenever this seminal recording was dropped in the set.
Tony Roots, known for his cultural and spiritual themes, delivers a powerful vocal performance, reminding us that life’s most important journey is overcoming obstacles to find ‘Jah Love on the Mountain Top.’ This message is as relevant in today’s fast-paced, easy-come-easy-go consumer culture as it was when recorded three decades ago.
The Firehouse Crew - renowned for their work with iconic acts like Luciano and Sizzla shine brightly on this riddim, with the MPC drum machine-centered sound of 90s Jamaican roots reggae. An up-tempo 4/4 steppers beat layered with rich analogue textures and soulful instrumentation defines this timeless recording.
The first of many collaborations between Studio 55, Before Zero Records, and Footsie, the King Original legacy continues into the future, honouring the enduring contributions of Fada Waz and his collaborators.
Clifton Carnegie aka Ras Wazair aka Fada Waz Clifton Carnegie, known as Ras Wazair, founded King Original Sound System in 1973, establishing it as East London’s foremost reggae sound. Operating under his Studio 55 moniker, he collaborated with legends like Johnny Osbourne, Barry Brown, Michael Prophet, Cornell Campbell, and Frankie Paul through imprints such as Original Sounds, Studio 55, and Original International. A mentor to many of the UK’s top sound systems and a key figure in London’s RasTafari community, Ras Wazair’s connections with prominent Jamaican artists, bands, and producers like Fattis Burrell ensured that Jamaican music remained an influential force in the UK sound system scene.
King Original Founded in 1973 by Fada Waz, King Original Sound System shaped East London’s reggae scene for over two decades. Fada Waz and his son Footsie—a UK Grime pioneer who in later years expanded the legacy through his KO LP series and sold-out King Original mixed-genre events at London’s top venues—worked together until Footsie assumed full control following Fada Waz’s passing in 2021. Having worked with artists such as Dizzee Rascal, Arctic Monkeys, The Prodigy, D-Double E, Wiley, and Skepta, Footsie’s dedication to King Original has reinvigorated the legacy that underpins all UK bass music—the reggae sound system.
Joining Footsie is his brother, Wazair’s last born Ras D also Jah Model, and long-time collaborator Sir Spyro, producer of two UK number-one hits with Stormzy and son of UK reggae stalwart Nerious Joseph. Armed with cutting-edge QSS sound system technology, King Original continues to set trends, shaping the future of UK bass music.
Tony Roots Hailing from Manchester, Jamaica, in the 1980s, Tony Roots emerged alongside iconic figures like Garnet Silk and Tony Rebel. While his peers remained in Jamaica, Tony moved to the UK, where he went on to release ten albums and numerous singles, including hits like Grow Your Natty Dread Locks and Hola Zion. A steadfast champion of Rastafari, Tony has collaborated with legends such as the Firehouse Crew, earning worldwide respect and a devoted following within both the reggae community and the UK sound system scene.
The Firehouse Crew Formed in 1986, The Firehouse Crew became a cornerstone of the 1990s roots-reggae revival. Initially associated with King Tubby’s Firehouse label before establishing their own, the band rose to prominence through collaborations with producer Philip “Fattis” Burrell at Xterminator Records. Their contributions to timeless albums like Luciano’s Where There is Life highlight their extraordinary musicianship. Over the years, The Firehouse Crew has backed iconic artists such as Sizzla, Buju Banton, and Beres Hammond, cementing their legacy as masters of roots reggae.

Red Peak Sound is honored to announce our next 10" single with the one and only Junior Dread from São Paulo, Brazil. J.Brenner met Junior Dread in Minneapolis in 2022 at the Word Sound Power Festival, and the connection grew from there. By the end of 2022 two new tracks had been written and from there a proper trial period. Numerous mixes, dubplates, and test plays have lead us to the final release. On the A side we have Dread Of Babylon. A slow and heavy stepper that creates the vision of looking into the heart of Babylon from the mountain top. Reminding us all to stand tall for what is right. Followed by a rough and tough dubwise mix that drives the bass through the echo chambers and tears the rhythm back to its foundation. Flipping over to the B side, Junior Dread leads us through a deeper meditation on Jah Jah A Me. The one drop rhythm and concise lyrics create the space to ascend us into the astral realms. Bringing us closer to the light. The dub version builds on the swirling atmosphere, becoming lost somewhere between space and time. BLACK SUN LP! Fikir Amlak and Akashic Records met Crucial Rob during the "Serious Time" remix challenge in 2020. Out of over 200 entrants, Rob's mixes rose to the top and he won the contest.
The bredrin continued working together - reasoning, recording and performing live shows. Their next release was "Middle Pillar" which came out as a Green King Cuts 7" polyvinyl.
That release did very well and we decided to build a full album focused on the theme of Alchemy. Eventually this turned into a 15-track album with the first 10 tracks being pressed to an LP!
The Bandcamp / Digital album has 5 extra tracks that are not on the vinyl LP, including Dreadstone and Truth Seeker with dubs, plus a beautiful acoustic version of Black Sun.
While all of the parties have released plenty of music, this is the first LP for Akashic Records, Fikir Amlak and Crucial Rob. The Black Sun LP ships for June 28th release date.

Dub Judah, a paragon of musical excellence, has an extensive career showcasing mastery of multiple instruments and his distinctive vocal style. His prolific output on his 'Dubtech' label, his role as the bass player for the Twinkle Brothers, and his numerous contributions to music underline his exceptional artistry.
In this release, his inimitable vocal style distills a timeless message—a universal strategy for progress. He reminds us that the most effective solutions are often rooted in the most fundamental acts of will. This is a reminder that progress begins with the individual's decision to 'Put Your Best Foot Forward.' Such an ethos acts as a blueprint for life, urging us to confront challenges with our best efforts and, in doing so, become architects of a better world.
'Best Foot Forward' has been anthemic on the reggae sound system scene for over a decade. It began as a dubplate for Salomon Heritage Sound System on the 'Joshua’s Anthem' riddim, commissioned by Roots Arna from Kibir La Amlak in 2011. As the years passed, it became evident that the dubplate was too impactful to remain just a dub. After several revisions and collaborative efforts between Kibir La Amlak and Salomon Heritage, it evolved beyond its original form into a modern roots reggae classic now ready for public release.
The reworked track now features contributions from Jah David and Tippy I of Zion I Kings, alongside other notable musicians such as Westfinga, Ashanti Selah, Okiel McIntyre, Zoe Brown, and Greg Jata. Produced, mixed, and arranged by Kibir La Amlak, mastered to tape and cut to vinyl by Lewis Hopkin, it is being released globally as a collaborative effort between Before Zero Records and Salomon Heritage Label.
The B-side offers a refreshed 'Joshua’s Anthem,' with Aba Ariginal and I-Jah Salomon's solos now complemented by Okiel and Zoe’s horn arrangements, maintaining the track’s anthemic quality.
Following the vocal track, a dynamic Kibir La Amlak dub mix emerges, infused with syncopated delays and reverberant spring crashes. A straightforward riddim cut follows the horn piece, giving listeners a deep dive into the musical composition and providing sound system selectors with the perfect canvas for vocalists and chanters.
We're excited to unveil "Free Indeed" by Akae Beka and Higher Bound Productions on vinyl for the first time as part of our ongoing collaboration with Higher Bound Productions. Produced in 2012, this remarkable collection represents a tapestry of deeply resonant melodies and emotions showcasing the perfect harmony between Vaughn Benjamin and producer Ryan 'Ishence' Willard showcasing their undeniable artistry. With each note and lyric, they both paint a vivid portrait of their shared creative vision, demonstrating an unparalleled synergy and depth of expression.
Another inferno is ignited by the legendary producer Jack Ruby in the next installment of the reissue series. Once again, featuring the iconic Tyrone Taylor with "Birds of a Feather," whose vocals soar above a foundation of pure roots reggae, originally recorded in 1976. The heat doesn't stop there, as for the first time on 7-inch vinyl, we unleash the fury of "Death Before Dishonour," an instrumental by Jack Ruby's militant Black Disciples backing band with seriously blazing horns that leave an undeniable mark. This is the first time ever that "Birds of a Feather" and its instrumental counterpart are paired together.
Get ready for a double dose of roots fire with the next Jack Ruby reissue! This 12" packs a serious punch on both sides. First up, the legendary Tyrone Taylor with "Move Up Black Man." Originally recorded in 1976, this anthem for empowerment is finally getting its rightful release as a single. Next up, for an absolute deep roots experience, we have "Free Rhodesia" a monumental instrumental on the "Rockfort Rock" rhythm featuring the full lineup of the Black Disciples backing band. Jack Ruby himself introduces the band one by one, and for those who remember, this track gets a mention in the iconic film "Rockers," where Ruby requests the drumming talents of the one and only Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace.
