Vijan, originally released in 2003 by I Grade Records, is a seminal release from the “golden era” of St. Croix roots reggae, now available for the first time on 12” vinyl courtesy of Before Zero Records.
Produced by the legendary combination of Vaughn Benjamin and Laurent “Tippy I” Alfred, Vijan balances the raw, spiritual intensity of Vaughn’s songwriting with the sophisticated, melodic arrangements that became the hallmark of the I Grade sound.
This album features an incredible lineup of musicians who helped shape the sound of Virgin Islands reggae. The production credits boast the textured guitar layers of Tuff Lion, the deep, driving bass of Kenyatta Itola, and the rhythmic precision of Dion “Bosie” Hopkins. Uniquely, this album also showcases Vaughn Benjamin’s versatility as a multi-instrumentalist, contributing drums, bass, and keys on standout tracks like “All Ye Naashan” and “Thanks for Life”.
Akae Beka’s inimitable style of rich, deep, multi-layered songwriting and uncompromising devotion to Rastafari is on full display here. At the point of his untimely passing in 2019, Vaughn Benjamin had released over 70 albums, solidifying his place as one of the most prolific reggae artists ever known. Vijan remains a glowing highlight in this expansive catalogue, capturing a specific moment of creative brilliance in the early 2000s.
The vinyl reissue allows listeners to engage with the album’s analogue richness and features the striking original artwork by Marcus Wilson.

The much-missed Vaughn Benjamin reminds us why his approach to reggae lyricism remains peerless with “Charges,” a standout track from the Polarities LP released on 7” vinyl for the first time. Arriving amidst an era of global economic shifts, the release feels forcefully timely. Genius metaphorical wordplay and wide-ranging subjects are distilled into a cohesive whole as the global economy and its entrapping neo-colonial rules come under the microscope. Produced by Zion I Kings with Tippy I at the helm, the track is anchored by the rock-solid drumming of Lloyd “Junior” Richards and the propulsive bass of David “JAH David” Goldfine. This release features a previously unheard B-side dub, giving space to the celestial synth work of the late Andrew “Drew Keys” Stoch.
This series honours both the vocal and version culture of the reggae sound system and the profound lyricism of Vaughn Benjamin. We have consistently received two requests in relation to releasing the LPs: “Can we have dub versions?” and “Where can we read the lyrics?” Our response is the ‘Akae Beka - vocal, version and word-sound collection.’ Before Zero Records worked with Tippy I Grade to mix a series of dub mixes from a carefully curated selection of his extensive works with Vaughn Benjamin. The vocal and corresponding dub mixes were then cut to wax by Lewis Hopkin of Star Delta and wrapped in a collage made of Ras Marcus’s artworks, which he crafted for various LP covers of Vaughn’s works throughout the years with the lyrics transcribed and printed on the rear of each sleeve.

The continued relevance of the work of Akae Beka is forceful on the movingly topical Rastafari statement Imandment To Heart. Taken from 2021’s album Polarities and produced by Zion I Kings with Tippy I at the helm, the track presents a striking contrast: an uplifting major-key Rub A Dub rhythm, powered by renowned Jamaican drummer Kirk Bennett, sets the stage for scathing lyrics linking “chaos theory,” refugee crossings, and prophetic judgment. Vaughn Benjamin calls for a moral law “written upon the inward part” amidst global turmoil. Released on 7” vinyl for the first time by Before Zero Records, the single is backed by a B-side dub sculpted sonically by Laurent “Tippy I” Alfred at his Holy Mountain Studio in St Croix.

The day after Living Testament was recorded, Vaughn advised that he wanted to record some riddims. An all-star team gathered, including:

Once everyone was assembled, Vaughn laid out his creative vision by humming what he wanted each musician to play. Each dub was composed and directed by Vaughn.
THE AKAE BEKA SCROLLS is a unique album in the discography of Akae Beka. It’s an instrumental album with several interludes of Vaughn singing and playing acoustic guitar.

A soulful collaboration between Akae Beka and Tiken Jah Fakoly, 'Everything Bless' is an anthem of acceptance, inner peace, and spiritual kinship. Zion I Kings' production provides a serene backdrop for Benjamin's meditative lyrics and Tiken's Bambara affirmations, with the dub version cultivating a stripped-down, yet joyful resonance.
Black Carbon feat. Chronixx:
Vaughn Benjamin and Chronixx intertwine their delicate voices and profound thoughts in 'Black Carbon,' a contemplative piece that reflects on our common origin and critiques societal divisions. Accompanied by a rich musical tapestry, the track is a meditation on unity, enriched by Tippy I Grade’s dub version that elevates its intricate instrumentation.
Sow And The Reap:
In 'Sow And The Reap,' Vaughn Benjamin delivers piercing insights with his final recording for I Grade Records. The track weaves pressing themes of governance and justice with nature-inspired metaphors, all set to an inexorable reggae beat with Romain “Teflon Zincfence” Arnett’s programmed drums and Drew Keys’ poignant trombone and synth, complemented by a haunting dub version.
This Limited Edition CD is a premium digipak with a 12 panel poster included! The poster has 2 sides, one with Vaughn as the Archangel Michael and the other side with the cover art by Ras Elijah Tafari.

This groundbreaking body of work, originally mixed and now remastered for the vinyl release by Tippy I, has an enduring appeal rooted in its forward-thinking compositions, including contributions from the downbeat production collective (M1 of dead prez, Vijay Iyer, Tippy I and Sol Messiah) on the title track "Let Live" and "Fighting for Her."
The album features instrumental contributions ranging from the rich and deep bass work of Kenyatta Itola to the textured guitar layers provided by Tuff Lion and Abijah Hicks. "Let Live" is a unique listening experience that transcends traditional genre limitations.

Roberto Sanchez and Ruel Klyve Moncrieffe provide background vocals. The striking and colorful cover art is by longtime Zion High Productions collaborator Ato K.D. Roberts. In 2023, Zion High Productions is celebrating 20 years of delivering “crucial Rastafari music for these crucial times”.

At the time of his untimely passing in 2019, Akae Beka had released over 70 LPs, making him one of the most prolific reggae artists ever known.
Jah Grid, features all-live instrumentation roots. Vaughn Benjamin's vocals and writing were exceptional and coupled with mystical and intense music played by veteran roots players. The album was produced by Tippy I, Blackfoot, and Vaughn Benjamin, and included live drums, heavy bass grooves, and melodic keyboard playing. Tuff Lion played guitar on several tracks, and Akae Beka produced and played on three songs. Jah Grid was a powerful listening experience, with each song taking the listener to new dimensions of lyrical content and musical presentation.

Mek A Menshun features the stellar musicianship of the ZIK distinguished in typical fashion by the rock-solid drumming of Lloyd "Junior" Richards. On this album, his playing is complemented by Aston Barrett Jr. ("By Day", "Only Now") and Kirk Bennett ( "Kagm Mystory", "Mek A Menshun"). The signature stylings of the other core ZIK musicians are augmented by horns (Andrew "Drew Keys" Stoch -trombone, Donald "Jahbless" Toney -saxophone), flute- Sheldon "Attiba" Bernard, kette- Andrew "Bassie" Campbell, and the guitar of Chet Samuel. ZIK guitarist Andrew "Moon" Bain contributes a string arrangement on "Only Now". Throughout the album, Laurent "Tippy I" Alfred's spot-on organ shuffle bubbles the rhythm forward. Many of the ‘Mek A Menshun’ tracks were among the last recordings done by the veteran engineer Gary Woung.

Kings Bell, first made available to the world on CD and digital on November 1, 2011, is now being released on a 12” vinyl courtesy of Before Zero Records. This LP joined the best of St Croix with the best of Jamaica: an amazing lineup of players spearheaded by the venerable Jamaican production maestro Andrew “Bassie” Campbell. The result of this collaboration is Kings Bell – a modern roots masterpiece. As Vaughn Benjamin’s first-ever full-length collaboration with a Jamaican producer, Kings Bell was a historic release and features some of the greatest musicians the genre has ever seen including Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, Earl "Chinna" Smith, Squidley Cole, Mikey “Boo” Richards and Sticky Thompson.
The driving musical force behind the album, producer and bassist Andrew "Bassie" Campbell has crafted beautiful rhythms that truly compliment the deep lyrics of Vaughn Benjamin. The power and authenticity of Andrew Bassie’s productions stand out from the mass of slickly-produced modern roots coming out of Jamaica today. Much of the music was recorded organically in Jamaica at Tuff Gong Studio, with additional overdubs, vocal recording and mixing completed at I Grade’s studio in St. Croix. The result is a collection of songs that capture not only the essence of classic roots from the hands and minds of some of the individuals who have literally helped build the genre, but also the urgency and innovation of the present time. In more than seventy albums and in over twenty years of Midnite music nothing like this cross-fertilization of Jamaican classic roots tradition mixed with St. Croix’s own deep roots tradition has ever happened, making "Kings Bell" a glowing highlight in the expansive catalogue of Vaughn Benjamin. A catalogue born from a non-stop movement in pursuit of progressing his craft and delivering his message to the world.
